Previous Day

  • Lab in-personnel: Himangshu
Status Kept Turbo pumping on the IVC overnight. MC(H35) = 12 K
1000 Fill LN2 cold trap bath
1010 Close IVC valves at top of fridge.
1030 Turn on 4He pump. Open Recovery valve to 4He pump. Pump out line to 1K pot (speedivalve closed). Check pressure in 1K Pot (with V4a open, 4He pump inlet valve closed). 1K Pot = 100 mbar on G3.
Pump out 1K Pot slowly, throttling the flow at the valve at the pump inlet, opening just until the pump gets louder, then waiting, then opening a little more, etc. With pump just a little loud, can see pressure go down at the mechanical gauge. When this is low, open valve a bit more. When P2 starts to lower down, open valve all the way.
1039 Open 1K Pot needle valve → 15°. 1K Pot → – K / 40 mbar
1218 MC temp drops to 3 K and linearly dropping
1222 MC/Still = 3.09/3.00. G1(fridge+dump) = 350 mbar.
1230 Open 1K Pot needle valve → 45°(1 1/2 unit). 1K Pot → – K / 60 mbar
1400 MC/Still = 2.46/2.26 K. G1(fridge+dump) = 150 mbar, flattening.
1405 Close V5 and V9, leaving 150 mbar mixture in dump (G2)
1406 Turn on 3He pump. G1(condenser) → 200 mbar
1408 Start circulation through Trap 1. V2 → mark1 then slowly to mark 2. Condenser peaks at 450 mbar. MC(H35) → 2.01 K. Still → 2.05 K / – mbar
1416 V2 → mark2 then slowly to mark 3. Condenser peaks at 550 mbar. MC(H35) → 1.81 K. Still → 1.91 K / – mbar
1421 G2 was above 650 and rising, so i opened V9 to release some of the mixture back to dump to work with less mixture first
1423 G1 is 550. V2 is fully opened. Waiting to see P1 showing values.
1428 Close V8 and open v9 to do a one-shot way to pump on the still to lower the temp. open V8 again and close v9
1430 open VT slowly to see if we can see a change in P1. turn about 60 deg at a time and look at G1 and P1. G1=300 mbar, p1=max out
1433 After a few turns, G1 =350 mbar, P1 = 1 atm, MC temp lowering
1436 After a few turns, G1 = 400 mbar, p1 = 2000 mTorr, MC lowering in steps/downward trending
How to know if we have turned enough to cross the 100% mark? After turns, it won't have any effect on MC temp or P1. P1 hovers in the range 300-500 mTorr. MC flattening at 1.33 K
1443 Open V10 in steps, to pull the rest of the mixture out of the dump into circulation. Open V10 and wait a few seconds as P1 max out, Close V10, wait till P1 is in 300-500 mTorr range, repeat
1453 Still is much warmer 1.95 K. Lets do another one-shot to cool the still first and then repeat the above step
1500 One-shot instead increased the Still temp 5.5K. 1K Pot needle valve → 30° again to lower still temp.
1505 1K Pot needle valve → 15° again to lower still temp.
Since Still is very hot, 3-4 K, decided to stop circulation and retry tomorrow
