Previous Day

  • Lab in-personnel: Matt, Michael
Status Run 76 prep. All mixture in dump. LHe Trap and LN2 Trap 1 still have contaminants. Cryostat Vacuum Jacket pumped out. Tower removed.
1230 On Friday we discovered that the lead collimator cup that Scott had built to hold the smoke-detector Am-source for the 2D source mover would not fit around the source housing. He didn't include clearance - he recommends it be 0.005 inch greater ID.
1245 Take collimator to Mike Rother to see if he can increase the hole. Suggests turning it in a lathe if possible and using a metal file to carve it out some. But putting in in a collet wound up crushing it into a triangle. Scott is having the CSE shop make a new one - this apparently can be done in just a couple days.
1300 The new LakeShore resistance bridge (Model 372) with 16-sensor scanner arrived. We need to 1) figure out how to connect it to our thermometers and 2) figure out how to connect to the computer.
Scanner has 4 DSub-25 connectors each of which can accommodate 4 thermometers. Thinking about building a new box to connect fridge thermometer cables to then fan them out to DSub cables to connect to the scanner. The cables have male military connectors that connect to females on the box, see below:

Consultation with Bill Gilbert on getting new female military (Amphenol 26pin) connectors for a new box. He says those connectors suck and recommends something new. I do remember these being difficult to solder. One option: remove military ends from cables and replace with DSub-25 (cable ends came with the scanner, we can use those). These would plug directly into scanner, no extra box necessary.
Went through Amphenal and DSub pins on the existing thermometry box to create a pin map for the cables. This is in a spreadsheet on the fridge computer.
1645 Partially disassembled the end of one of the fridge thermometry cables. Looks like there aren't unique colors for each pin. Will need to add labels maybe while dismantling existing cable.
Note that one cable has Cernox, MC-H35, and the tower thermometer wires - that's 12 wires. The other has Still, Coldplate, and MC-Sensor, also 12. Likely one of these also includes 1K Pot thermometer, Sorb thermometer, still heater and MC heater. These seem to tee-off to the IGH at the top of the fridge, that's where we access them now.
