Previous Day

Setup DIB1/3/4 → 3.2 MHz filters 2/3/1 → cable 3/1/2 → gender changer 3/?/2 → HVConn 1/3/2 → HV 1/2 → DCRCX(4)/DCRC50(3)
DCRC33(2) → 1kV power supply → HV input

Lead poly shield is erected, N/E/W walls complete, no poly or lead on S wall.
0915 Tower/MC/Coldplate = 49.5/41.7/188 mK, Still = 1.70±0.15 K / 0.150 mbar, G1/G2 = 331/309 mbar, 1K Pot = 1.77 K / 13 mbar. MC heater = 5 μW. MB = 38.0%
0920 Fill LN2 cold trap full.
0930 Put channels into transition. All look good except DCRC4 pC, which is again showing noisy, often inverted pulses.
1220 Let's do electrical checks on the DIBS without HV on them.
Power down DCRCs.

Results:

  • DIB1pD and DIB4pA SQUID and Feedback are now reading open. These are the channels that were biased (they are not Side1 channels). (DIB1pD was biased before modifying the HV board, DIB3pA has been biased throughout because that's the one connected to the electrode.) So it looks like we may have fried the phonon components in those channels.
    • This pattern did not repeat on DIB3 - we had DIB3pA,B,D biased originally too, but there's no change to on the SQUID and Feedback status on these channels. (pA SQUID is open but that was true before the run started.)
  • No issues seen in DIB3pC (this is connected to Side1pA, which became nonoperational after our first high-leakage test). As Nick determined from SQUID tuning, it looks like the problem on this channel must be either at the TES or (more likely) at the input coil. We can't measure whether there's an open on the input coil/TES branch at the breakout box because they are shorted by the shunt resistor, so we'll have to wait until we deinstall to check these components.

Discussion:

It looks like the way we are applying HV has definite problems in terms of leakage in the SQUETs and damage to SQUET components. Since all three DIBs have readout Side1 channels, we can't avoid biasing some elements of a SQUET and grounding others, if we run the HV through the SQUET. Nick suggests an alternative: use a stripline diverter board at the SQUET end, disconnect the HV wire(s) from the SQUET at the board, and route the HV wire(s) to an unused tower face, plugging in directly at the SQUET socket in the tower. At the top of the tower use a wire to route this to the electrode.

1310 Tower temperature rose from 49.5→52.6 mK after the channels were put into transition this morning and is still around there, kinda unstable, even after disconnecting the DCRCs.
1310 Turn off MC heater
1340 Tower has fallen to 40 mK
Beginning warmup
1410 Stop circulation: close V6. Allows mix to expand into still line
After 5 minutes Still rises to 6 mbar, Tower rises to 170 mK, G1/G2 fall to 250 mbar.
1425 Tower 0.5 K and rising. G1/G2 160 mbar and falling.
1425 Pump mix from LN2 Traps to dump: Close V13a to close inlet to trap 1 (the one we are circulating through), close V1 to isolate condenser. Open V9 to open pump outlet to dump. Open V5 to pump out Trap 1. When trap is low close 12a+speedivalve & 5, open 12b and speedivalve to check Trap 1. It has a few tenths of a mbar. But there was about 100 mbar in the small volume between 12b and the speedivalve. Pump this to dump for a few minutes by opening 5. Isolate both traps and remove from LN2 bath. Close V5.
1445 G2(dump) = 30.2 mbar.
1455 Close V9 to isolate dump. Turn off 3He pump.
1455 Open Condenser and Still to Dump: open V1, V4, V14
1500 Tower = 0.71 K
1500 Change LakeShore bridge range 200 → 6.32 kΩ, leave excitation at 6.32 uV
1500 G1 (dump/fridge) = 32.1 mbar. Tower = 0.78 K.
1500 MB = 29.8%
1500 Stop 1K Pot: Close 1K Pot speedivalve to stop pumping on pot. Leaving needle valve open. Close V4a and valve to 4He pump. Open 4He outlet to “exhaust” and close recovery valve. Turn off 4He pump.
1520 G1 (dump/fridge) = 36.4 mbar. Tower/1K Pot = 0.83/2.67 K. All rising.
1520 G1 (dump/fridge) = 51.7 mbar. Tower/1K Pot/Sorb = 1.12/4.24/5.3 K. G1 and Tower rising.
1645 MB = 27.7%
1950 MB = 22.8%
