2018/03/28 (Wednesday)

Previous Day

Setup: DIB1/2 → SL 43/41 → 3.2 MHz filters → cables 3/1 → DCRC50(3)/55(1).
Bias sweep overnight. Ended with bias returned to 0 and a flash. Had triggering issues when setting up the sequence. This morning towerfe seems to have crashed.
0928 Tower/MC/Coldplate = 36.6/32.2/193 mK, Still = 1.51 K / 0.11 mbar, G1/G2 = 153/149 mbar, 1K Pot = 1.54 K /9 mbar. Main bath = 71.1%
0933 Tweak 1K pot open a bit more. 1K Pot → 1.615 K / 24 mbar
0934 Fill LN2 cold trap bath.
0941 Stop programs, power cycle DCRCs.
0946 Set 3.5V bias and look at traces on PulseViewer. Seems to be triggering properly.
0951 Start 5 min test series of 3.5 V data using sequencer (code below)to simply set bias and take 5min of data with 1000 beginning randoms, and a 50/40/70/50 bin threshold trigger on DCRC1qI/qO/DCRC3qI/qO, with 1.6384 ms pulses (8192 length) and 400 us prepulse (500 length). Noise triggers

1014 Good triggering. Okay, maybe setting the bias from 0 with the sequence causes the bad triggering state?
1015 Manually set bias = 0V
1020 Start 5 min test series of 3.5 V data using sequencer (code above) to simply set bias and take 5min of data with above settings. Noise triggers
1027 Without grounding, Start 5 min test series of 3.5 V data using sequencer (code above) to simply (re)set bias and take 5min of data with above settings.
1028 1K pot = 1.601K / 20.0 mbar
1030 Good triggering. So maybe the first 5 minutes are noisy when we set bias via the sequence for some reason?
1033 Ground detector. Raise DCRC1 triggers by 10 ADC.
1036 Start 5 min test series of 3.5 V data using sequencer to simply set bias and take 5min of data with 1000 beginning randoms, and a 60/50/70/50 bin threshold trigger on DCRC1qI/qO/DCRC3qI/qO, with 1.6384 ms pulses (8192 length) and 400 us prepulse (500 length). Noise triggers
1043 Without grounding, Start 5 min test series of 3.5 V data using sequencer (code above) to simply (re)set bias and take 5min of data with above settings. Good triggering
It kind of seems like starting the second sequence initiates the good triggering, but it's hard to tell since it also has 1 min of randoms. It could be that the noise just settles down during that 6th minute.
1047 Note that the DCRC Stat1 LEDs seem to indicate when the board has triggered. During 20Hz randoms or noise triggering, they are on steadily, but when triggering looks good, they flash seemingly stochastically.
1050 Ground detector
1053 Start 10 min test series of 3.5 V data using sequencer to simply set bias and take 10min of data with 1000 beginning randoms, and a 60/50/70/50 bin threshold trigger on DCRC1qI/qO/DCRC3qI/qO, with 1.6384 ms pulses (8192 length) and 400 us prepulse (500 length). All Noise triggers Both DCRC Stat1 LEDs are steadily ON.
1107 Still noise triggers after 10 min, so it seems starting a second sequence (or series?) restores triggering.
1108 Without grounding, Start 10 min test series of 3.5 V data using sequencer (code above) to simply (re)set bias and take 5min of data with above settings. Indeed, good triggering Both DCRC Stat1 LEDs flicker sporadically.
1111 Realize that one change is correlated with this onset of triggering issues yesterday. Prior to 1638 yesterday, most of the sequences I wrote had included a 10 second pause after setting the bias but before starting the run. This was removed from the sequence run at 1638 yesterday (which failed) in order to see more of the data near the time of biasing. This pause was also removed from the sequence run at 1442 on monday, which failed with noise triggers. Let's try putting the pause in our little test sequence.
1122 Ground detector
1125 Start 5 min test series of 3.5 V data using the following simple sequence:
1 COMMENT "jus take data for a while"
  2
  3 ODBSET "/Logger/Write data" y

  5 ODBSET "/Equipment/Tower01/Settings/DCRC1/Charge/Bias (V)[0]" 3.5

  7 ODBSET "/Equipment/Tower01/Settings/DCRC3/Charge/Bias (V)[0]" 3.5
  8 ODBSET "/Equipment/Tower01/Settings/DCRC3/Charge/Bias (V)[1]" 3.5

 10 WAIT SECONDS 10

 13 WAIT SECONDS 300
 14 TRANSITION STOP
 15
 16 ODBSET "/Logger/Write data" n
1128 Data is noise triggers DCRC1 Stat1 LED is flickering after randoms, but DCRC3's seems to be ON steady.
1133 Enable logger and manually Start 2 min test series without changing any settings. Noise triggers DCRC1/3 Stat1 LED = steady ON/flicker
1136 Start 5 min test series of 3.5 V data using the same sequence above. Good triggers, DCRC1/3 Stat1 LED = flicker/flicker
1139 Something stupid is going on. Let's just restart the whole shebang. Stop the series, ground the detector, stop the programs, power down the DCRCs and restart MIDAS
1142 Power on DCRCs, start programs. Judging by Stat1 LEDs, both DCRCs are constantly triggering.
1149 Confim in pulse viewer that we're triggering on noise. Turn off all but DCRC1QI trigger. Initially, it is the bad state where I have to set the trigger level to ~800 to get out of noise triggers. But then it suddenly goes back to the correct triggering behavior! Now I can turn the level back down to 50 to get nice pulses. DCRC1 Stat1 LED seems to match observed trigger rate in pulse viewer.
1150 Re-enable all other charge triggers, with 60/50/70/50 bin threshold trigger on DCRC1qI/qO/DCRC3qI/qO good triggering.
1154 Edit charge_bias_scan_R67.msl to include 10s pauses after biasing.
1156 Start bias scan sequence of 120 min series , with DCRC bias = (3.5, 9, -3.5, -9), with 30s flash, 30min cooldown (including initial flash), 1000 beginning randoms, and a 60/50/70/50 bin threshold trigger on DCRC1qI/qO/DCRC3qI/qO, with 1.6384 ms pulses (8192 length) and 400 us prepulse (500 length).
1255 Took a look at data coming in with BatViewer - we seem to be triggering constantly. The traces show relatively low noise, so it's not a noise problem, I guess things are still just behaving stupidly.
1300 Stop the sequence. Let's start a data run manually and see what happens.
1300 Start 63 min series , with DCRC bias = 3.5 V, 1000 beginning randoms, and a 60/50/70/50 bin threshold trigger on DCRC1qI/qO/DCRC3qI/qO, with 1.6384 ms pulses (8192 length) and 400 us prepulse (500 length).
1321 This manual series is triggering just fine.
1405 Stop run, ground and flash detector for 30s.
1438 Start 67 min series , with DCRC bias = 9 V, 1000 beginning randoms, and a 60/50/70/50 bin threshold trigger on DCRC1qI/qO/DCRC3qI/qO, with 1.6384 ms pulses (8192 length) and 400 us prepulse (500 length). Noise triggers, DCRC1 is triggering constantly
1439 Temperature spike from 37mK → 40mK and back when bias is applied.
1552 Flash for 30s
1610 Set DCRC bias to 9 V using set_DCRC_bias.msl DCRC LEDs seem to indicate good triggering
1612 Start 131 min series , with DCRC bias = 9 V, 1000 beginning randoms, and a 60/50/70/50 bin threshold trigger on DCRC1qI/qO/DCRC3qI/qO, with 1.6384 ms pulses (8192 length) and 400 us prepulse (500 length). Good triggering.
1620 1K Pot has drifted down since we tweaked it this morning, now 1K Pot = 1.54 K / 9 mbar. Tweak the needle valve open a little more.
1K Pot → 1.64 K / 32 mbar
1730 Fill LN2 cold trap bath. The LN2 storage Dewar ran out this morning and we didn't notice - didn't want to take the time to fill it, so instead filled a 5L Dewar then poured that into the trap bath. Need to fill LN2 storage Dewar first thing tomorrow.
1823 Stop data. Set biases to 0 V. Flash for 30 seconds.
1901 Set biases to -3.5 V. Then start a run using the Start button.
1901 Start 179 min series , with DCRC bias = -3.5 V, 1000 beginning randoms, and a 60/50/70/50 bin threshold trigger on DCRC1qI/qO/DCRC3qI/qO, with 1.6384 ms pulses (8192 length) and 400 us prepulse (500 length). Good triggering (checked at 1919).
2200 Stop data. Set biases to 0 V. Flash for 30 seconds.
2217 Set biases to -9 V. Then start a run using the Start button.
2217 Start 5 hr 35 min series , with DCRC bias = -9 V, 1000 beginning randoms, and a 60/50/70/50 bin threshold trigger on DCRC1qI/qO/DCRC3qI/qO, with 1.6384 ms pulses (8192 length) and 400 us prepulse (500 length). Good triggering.
0352 Stop data. Set biases to 0 V. Turn on LEDs to start a bake.
0806 Turn off LEDs to end bake
