2015/10/21 (Wednesday)

Previous Day

Current setup: iZIP mode, DIB1/2/3 → cables → 3.2 MHz filters → DCRC55/33/50.
Overnight: Taking Ba data. Last flash at 7:40. Tower temp stable.
0910 Fill LN cold trap Dewar
0915 Tower = 31.0 mK, Still = 0.085 mbar, G1/G2 = 95/95 mbar, 1K Pot = 1.54 K / 4 mbar, Main bath = 53.2%
0920 1K Pot pressure getting very low, worried it might run dry. Open needle valve about 5 degrees more.
0935 1K Pot has settled at 1.67 K / 12 mbar. Still/G1/G2 have risen to 0.11/115/110 mbar
0940 Begin strong neutron activation of detector with Pu-Be source. Using a bucket&pulley system:
Source fits in plastic bucket, screw at end of string allows bucket to be lowered to detector height in shield.
1045 Finish activation. There was a clear increase in tower temperature by about 0.15 mK when source was present.
1110 Mini-bake detector (flash detector until temperature levels off, then stop) in preparation for neutralization run.
1201 Phonon channels look good. Start 45min background data series at -/+4V, FG=5/2/5, OG=3, with 1000 initial randoms, 2000 events/file, and 30s flash and 25min cooldown after. Use phonon trigger thresholds from Monday:
A B C D
DIB1 36 40 42 40
DIB2 24 18 20 28
DIB3 40 46 58 48
1540 Commence LHe transfer (42.5%).
1635 Cease LHe transfer (91.4%).
1650 Start background bias sweep data for 30min series of 2 cycles of -/+8V, -/+6V, -/+4V, -/+2V, 0V, +/-2V, +/-4V, +/-6V, +/-8V, FG=5/2/5, OG=3, with 1000 initial randoms, 2000 events/file, and 30s flash and 25min cooldown after. Use phonon trigger thresholds from Monday. When viewing the pulses, it looks like breakdown occurred (shifted/erratic phonon baselines, jagged noise in pulses), which isn't surprising since we were only able to see proper pulses at this high of a voltage by cranking the voltage up past this value, then bringing it down. At which point, the pulses and baselines looked fine.
So stop data taking. Qbias still set to -/+8V. Crank up Qbias to -/+14V using DetectorControl VI, then lower back to -/+8V. Pulses look beautiful, and baselines are back at ~(-0.7V) as usual.
1655 Start background bias sweep data for 30min series of 2 cycles of -/+8V, -/+6V, -/+4V, -/+2V, 0V, +/-2V, +/-4V, +/-6V, +/-8V, FG=5/2/5, OG=3, with 1000 initial randoms, 2000 events/file, and 30s flash and 25min cooldown after. Use phonon trigger thresholds from Monday. Pulses look beautiful. The only problem is that when we do the second cycle of -/+8V, we'll have the breakdown problem, but it will be the middle of the night, so nobody will be here to fix it.
1705 Fill LN2 cold trap full.
