Previous Day

  • Lab in-personnel: Himangshu, Zach, Carson, Ping
Status Run 77 beginning, LN2 transfer yesterday, mixture in fridge
1153 MC(Cernox) = 77.3 K, Sorb = 127.0 K, G2/G1/P1 (circulation) = 532/594 mbar
1200 IVC = 1.6 mbar, Start pumping out IVC with Scroll Pump. When pressure falls below 0.1 mbar switch to Turbo Pump.
1205 Fill LN2 cold trap dewar
1210 Turn on 3He pump and open V6 to 12.4%, reestablishing circulation like yesterday. G2/G1/P1 → 648/719/0.85 mbar and settle
1215 Close V12a speedivalve for 2 minutes to assess throughput. G1 falls at 68 mbar/min, good. Reopen V12a speedivalve
1220 Pump mixture to dump. Close V13a, open V3 (V9 already open), open V6 more in steps up to 30%
1306 G1 = 1.8 mbar, P1 = 0.022 mbar. Stop pumping mixture to dump. Close V12a+speedivalve, close V1, close V3, close V6
1310 V6 is fully closed, close V9, leaving 707.7 mbar in the dump. Leave 3He pump on.
Throughput test procedure, Cold Trap 1:
  1. All mixture in dump, LN2 trap 1 cold, condenser & still valves open (3He pump on - optional)
  2. Open V9, V13a, V12a+speedivalve, V3. Wait for G1 to be close to G2 (within 100 mbar).
  3. Close V12a+speedivalve and V3, open V1
  4. monitor G1
1315 Perform mixture throughput test at MC = 77 K using above procedure with 3He pump on. Let G1 rise to 568 mbar before Step 3, then it falls to 76 mbar, then rises. Throughput = 46.5 mbar/min.
1325 Open mixture to both sides of the fridge (V3) and cold LN2 Trap 1 (V12a+speedivalve).
1335 Turbo in IVC = 1.9 nbar, with the turbo valved out for a min, IVC = 22 nbar
1335 Pump IVC with Leak Detector, Turbo valved out, IVC = 270 pbarL/s
The leak checker was making a leak alarm noise once we valved the turbo out, but the rate is pretty low, we just turned its volume down…
1350 Begin blowing out LN2 (following Blow Out Liquid Nitrogen). Main bath (G3) → 400 mbar+1atm
1400 IVC = 300 pbarL/s, MB = 430 mbar+1atm
1403 No LN2 was flowing, accidentally left the stopper on the end of the hose, remove it and now we get flow
1405 IVC = 270 pbarL/s, MB = 420 mbar+1atm
1414 IVC = 250 pbarL/s, MB = 400 mbar+1atm
1500 LN2 blowout is complete. G3 at 103 mbar and stable. Close V2A, V5A, V4A, and V1A. Close the He gas supply and the valve on the gas line.
Wait for the rubber hose to warm up to remove the tubing from the transfer stick, and then plug the transfer stick. Now you will check to see if the MB is empty. You are going to pump on the MB with the He-4 pump.
1510 IVC = 1000 pbarL/s
1520 The helium cylinder ran out as the LN2 blowout ended, swap to a new cylinder and try resuming the blowout to see if there is any LN2 left, dont see any
1535 Start pumping out main bath with scroll pump.
1540 IVC = 990 pbarL/s
1548 IVC = 600 pbarL/s
1552 Open scroll pump fully, P2 falls in range soon after
1557 P2 = 0.7 mbar, stop pumping on main bath by closing the scroll pump valve and turning off the scroll pump.
1605 Pressurize MB with helium to 110 mbar above 1 atm.
1610 Isolate MB by closing V1a. Pump out line to the G3 volume with Scroll Pump. Isolate pump, then open 1K Pot speedivalve to check pressure: didn't see the mechanical gauge move much, P2 went to 220 mbar. Then pump out 1K Pot (needle valve closed) with Scroll Pump to 0.022 mbar on P2. Then close 1K Pot speedivalve and V4a. Open V1a again to monitor bath pressure, G3 = 157.2 mbar.
1625 Close and turn off leak checker. Let 63 μbar He exchange gas into IVC (very carefully).
1650 Begin initial LHe transfer @ MB = -1.0%
1655 Turn off 3He pump, we'll leave it off like last time.
1657 MC(Cernox)/Sorb = 77.9/140.3 K, IVC = 63 μbar, G1(fridge) = 599 mbar. G3(MB) = 600 mbar+1atm
1714 MC(Cernox)/Sorb = 77.9/140.0 K, G1(fridge) = 585 mbar. G3(MB) = 235 mbar+1atm
1716 Transfer pressure and G3 getting a bit low, increase the cylinder output pressure a little
1724 MC(Cernox)/Sorb = 77.9/134.5 K, IVC = 63 nbar, G1(fridge) = 562 mbar. G3(MB) = 450 mbar+1atm
Wait why is the IVC so low? we arent seeing cooling either so it makes sense, I'm going to add more exchange gas
1730 Added more exchange gas, it fell again, then added more, its at 8.6 μbar and now we see cooling.
1735 Adding this exchange gas is causing a lot of heating in the main bath, pressure getting up to 8 Psi on the mechanical gauge, G3 is maxed out
We paused the transfer, it seems we did not add nearly enough exchange gas to start, and now are paying the price, wait for pressures to settle and the fridge to cool before resuming the transfer
1742 MC(Cernox)/Sorb = 65/72.7 K, IVC = 63 μbar, G1(fridge) = 499 mbar. G3(MB) = 750 mbar+1atm
1750 Pressures are more stable now, resume transfer, the level meter went back down to -1% (from ~35%) and now the recovery meter is making noise since it is cold from all the gas, hopefully we didnt hurt it
1752 MC(Cernox)/Sorb = 56/33.4 K, IVC = 54 μbar, G1(fridge) = 529 mbar. G3(MB) = 758 mbar+1atm
1800 MC(Cernox)/Sorb = 49/8.4 K, IVC = 50 μbar, G1(fridge) = 463 mbar. G3(MB) = 424 mbar+1atm, MB = 10.5%
Something weird must have happened with the exchange gas at the start, both Himangshu and I remember seeing it settle at 63 μbar to start, then we probably glanced at it and thought it read 63 μbar again, but had actually dropped to nbar scale. Matt has suggested that the line was not purged well enough, I made sure to let gas through first, but maybe it wasnt enough
1811 MC(Cernox)/Sorb/1K Pot = 38.4/7.2/5.8 K, IVC = 34 μbar, G1(fridge) = 451 mbar. G3(MB) = 464 mbar+1atm, MB = 33.3%
1820 MC(Cernox)/Sorb/1K Pot = 29.3/6.7/5.4 K, IVC = 30 μbar, G1(fridge) = 448 mbar. G3(MB) = 442 mbar+1atm, MB = 51.7%
1826 MC(Cernox)/Sorb/1K Pot = 14.5/5.9/4.7 K, IVC = 19 μbar, G1(fridge) = 442 mbar. G3(MB) = 419 mbar+1atm, MB = 72.1%
1628 MC temp hit 10 K, open turbo to IVC. IVC pressure hit 2.2e-4 mbar after about a minute.
1630 MB = 74.6% and starting to fall, stopping transfer
1840 End LHe transfer @ MB = 62.5%
1848 the recovery meter camera stopped earlier because we went past its 2 hours, cant get an accurate value
1852 MC(Cernox)/Sorb/1K Pot = 4.29/5.4/4.4 K, IVC = 5.4 nbar, G1(fridge) = 500 mbar. G3(MB) = 185 mbar+1atm, MB = 62.5%
1854 Close V1a

Blow Out Liquid Nitrogen

Now you are going to pump out the LN2 that was used to cool the fridge to 77 K. The LN2 is going to get pushed out of the MB with He gas, and while this is happening you will monitor the helium leak rate.

  1. Turn on the leak checker and let it warm up for 20 minutes. Once warmed up, calibrate the leak checker.
  2. Connect leak checker to IVC. First, evacuate the line connecting the leak checker to pumping manifold first (using the scroll pump), and then open the valve connecting to IVC. Take a background reading. Note it in the run diary.
  3. Remove the rubber stopper from the transfer stick and attach the rubber hose to the transfer stick (as you did previously when preparing for the LN2 transfer). Make sure that the transfer stick hasn't moved vertically at all. We want it to be < 1/8“ from where it hit the transfer cone. If the transfer stick is not within the cone, you won't be able to remove all of the LN2.
  4. Attach a short metal transfer stick to the other end of the long rubber hose and insert this into a bomb dewar (holds 25 L).
    1. Make sure there is room for the hose to wiggle (and contract) when it's become frozen by the LN2.
    2. Make sure there is an extra bomb dewar close by in case the first one fills up.
  5. Seal the end of the He recovery line (where it connects to the top of the fridge) with a KF-25 blank.
  6. Make sure the He recovery valves on the wall are closed.
  7. Make sure all the valves on the right-hand side of the IGH are closed. Open the He gas cylinder. Open the He gas valve on the wall near the IGH - there should be a hose from this port to the vent inlet.
  8. Make sure that the manual valve on the 4He pumping line is closed and that the 1K Pot speedivalve is closed.
  9. Open the vent speedivalve, then open V2a, V5a, V4a, and V1a.
  10. Check - is the leak checker reading the background of the IVC? Did you record the background rate?
  11. Remove the blank from the end of the He recovery line. Allow helium to flow through for several seconds to purge the line. Then connect the recovery line to the main bath port at the top of the fridge.
  12. You are now pressurizing the main bath with helium gas. This should push LN2 out of the main bath. The rubber hose will get cold and stiff.
  13. Monitor G3 and make sure it doesn't go above 350 mbar. If it does, slightly close the regulator valve on the He gas tank and monitor the change.
    1. The reason you closed the large speedivalve on the He-4 pump is to protect it during this process. If the valve is not closed and the pressure of the gas goes above 400 mbar, the pressure from the gas in the line will cause oil to be pushed out of the He4 pump. This is a MESS to clean up and recover from. (outdated: we now isolate the pump with a manual valve.)
  14. LN2 will begin to flow out of the MB and into the bomb dewar. This process should take about 1.5 hours; keep monitoring the leak rate throughout this time. Be ready to switch bomb dewars.
  15. When the pressure reading in G3 drops significantly, the LN2 is almost completely out. Check the leak rate and record this value in the run diary.
  16. Close V2A, V5A, V4A, and V1A. Close the He gas supply and the valve on the gas line. Wait for the rubber hose to warm up to remove the tubing from the transfer stick, and then remove the transfer stick and plug the fridge port. Now you will check to see if the MB is empty. You are going to pump on the MB with the scroll pump.
  17. Open V4A and V1A.
  18. Turn on the scroll pump and open its inlet valve a small amount until it starts making noise. You are now evacuating the MB, continue to slowly open the scroll pump until P2 reads less than 1 mbar.
  19. If the pressure of P2 is not less than 1 mbar, you have LN2 left in the main bath. The reason for this could be that the transfer stick is too high or that you actually ran out of He-4 gas to push out the LN2. Check the positioning of the transfer stick and the amount of He-4 gas left in the gas tank. Once you have found the cause for the LN2 not being pushed out and corrected it, you will need to re-start the flow of He-4 gas to the MB.
    1. Isolate the main bath (close V4A and V1A).
    2. Open the valve on the He-4 gas tank. Make sure the valve on the copper gas line is closed.
    3. Evacuate the clear hose leading to the valve on the gas line by opening V2A and V5A (as you've done before).
    4. Close V4A and V1A.
    5. Open the He-4 gas valve on the gas line.
    6. Turn off the He-4 pump.
    7. Go to the pump room and close the large speedivalve on the He-4 pump.
    8. Open V2A, V5A, V4A.
    9. As before, open V1A when the pressure goes above 70 mbar, but make sure it doesn't rise too high.
    10. Hopefully you will see the hose start to cool, which means more LN2 is being blown out. When the hose becomes limp again, you can stop the He gas flow and stopper the transfer stick. Repeat the test of evacuating the MB with the He-4 pump (described in previous steps) to make sure all of the LN2 is out. Make certain that when you are ready to pump with the He-4 pump that the large speedivalve on the pump is opened. When conrmed that there is no LN2 left in the MB, continue to the next step.
  20. At this point the MB is being pumped on by the He-4 pump and you've confirmed that all of the LN2 is out. Isolate the He-4 pump and flush the MB with He-4 gas. This step is necessary to remove the LN2 transfer stick from the MB because we don't want air to rush in and freeze when you unplug the exhaust port. If you need to remind yourself how to do this, review section in appendix on how to pump and flush the MB.
  21. Confirm that the He-4 gas supply is off. The main bath should be full of He-4 gas.
  22. Remove the LN2 transfer stick and replace the plug into that exhaust port.
  23. Evacuate the MB again. This must be done before the LHe transfer (review explicit instructions to do so in the `Pump and Flush MB'section in the appendix).
  24. If necessary, you can use the recovered LN2 to fill the LN2 cold trap. See the appendix on how to do so.
