Previous Day

  • Lab in-person: Matt
  • Virtual partner: Nick/Derek
1337 Matt Fritts body temperature = 97.7 F.
1330 Matt arrives at lab.
1340 Turbo on IVC = 45 nbar. This is significantly worse than before the last disassembly/reassembly of the plumbing, so maybe the seals are worse this time. Or maybe the gauge is getting dirty.
1355 With turbo valved out for a while, IVC = 4.6 ubar. That also seems higher than usual.
1400 Leak detector on IVC, settling around 200 pbarL/s. Also higher than recently, usual it's around 70. So it definitely seems that it's worse after the last reassembly of E-box and T-pipe.
1405 Actually the LD has settled to 67 pbarL/s, which is similar to before. This leans more toward dirty gauge, not worsened vacuum.
1415 Leak checks at top of fridge. Strongest leak seen at T-pipe/elbow KF flange, originally →200 pbarL/s, later →700 pbarL/s. Smaller near elbow. No noticeable leak at other T-pipe flanges
1420 Start slowly filling IVC with N2 up to 1atm.
1440 Finish opening E-box and disconnecting striplines
1505 T-pipe is removed and now connected to Leak Detector with all openings capped (using the same o-rings as at the top of the fridge).
1520 Leak checks of T-pipe. At first the background was very low, 0.001 pbarL/s (bottomed out), and the elbow-side flange seemed to leak as high as 0.2 pbarL/s but not necessarily repeatable - that's very low anyway. The other flanges seemed to not show signal. Later, for some reason, base was higher - I tried venting and starting over, and redoing the calibration, but still high, up to 12 pbarL/s. At this level no leak was detectable at any of the flanges.
1550 Cap the LD with a thin wire to produce a leak, ~1000 pbarL/s base, squirting makes it rise 3 orders of magnitude (1e-3 mbarL/s). Cover entire cap and clamp with Q-Compound. Leak checking with Q-compound present produces same magnitude leak and the raised signal persists for a much longer time. What the hell, Q-compound seems worthless…
1625 Reassemble e-box and begin pumping on IVC with scroll pump.
1635 T-pipe wasn't sitting correctly, readjusted position let air suddenly into IVC. Let IVC up to 1 atmosphere with N2 again before readjusting and pumping again.
1650 Reattach T-pipe so it is in a better position, begin pumping on IVC with scroll pump.
1657 Scroll pump falls to 0.1 mbar. Swapping over to turbo pump.
1702 Matt leaves lab for the day.
1800 Matt Fritts body temperature = 98.3 F.
