Muon Telescope tests with no Sample

The muon telescope was constructed with out the middle PMT and sample scintillator. 1“ PMT 18 was the top PMT and connected to channel 3 of the oscilloscope. 2” PMT 8575B was the bottom PMT and connected to channel 4 of the oscilloscope. The run was done in the new dark room in PAN for a total of 18947 events, which took about 4 days to run.

Typical pulses for each PMT

Figure 1: Typical pulse on Channel 3.
Figure 2: Typical pulse on Channel 4.

The pulses shown in Figures 1 and 2 are from the same event number and represent a typical pulse for each PMT. The pulses on channel 3 (PMT 18) are typically about 1/10 the size of the pulses on channel 4 (PMT 8575B).

Pulse area spectra

Figure 3: Area under the pulse for Channel 3.
Figure 4: Area under the pulse for Channel 4.
Figure 5: Area under the pulse for both Channels.

The difference in typical pulse height is also clearly seen in the comparison of pulse areas in Figures 3, 4, and 5. The expected muon peak does seem visible for both PMTs, shown in the close-up spectra in Figures 3 and 4; however, they occur at very different pulse areas.
