Rocky Linux 8 MIDAS DAQ Instructions

Status: Dec 5 2025 ODB is working while PulseViewer needs compilation.

instructions to start old ODB on cdms8 server:

  • Login to spa-cdms8 server and switch to spa-u-cdmssoft user
  • sudo -u spa-u-cdmssoft -i
  • On directory /data/chocula/cdmssoft/packages_cdms8/repositories/MidasDAQ, source setup/umn/cdms2midasUMN_cdms8.env
  • Switch to /data/chocula/cdmssoft/packages_cdms8/repositories/MidasDAQ/online/bin
  • Start odb using ./cdms2_start_daq_umn.sh
  • Stop odb using ./cdm2_kill_daq_umn.sh
  • Open a remote session for PulseViewer using: ssh -YL 8082:localhost:8082 neog0001@spa-cdms8.spa.umn.edu

cdms2 machine (running CentOS Linux 7.9.2009) has retired and we are transitioning to Rocky Linux Release 8.10 on spa-cdms8.spa.umn.edu . I am writing down commands and other changes I am using to do this transition.

  • Login to spa-cdms8 server and switch to spa-u-cdmssoft user
  • sudo -u spa-u-cdmssoft -i

Root directory currently exist in this location /data/chocula/neog/packages/root-build/bin/thisroot.sh and I am checking if this root version can run in Rocky Linux 8. Error crash: Traceback

  • Follow instructions on this link to install Python3 and ROOT
  • Python3 (version: 3.7.13) is installed /data/chocula/cdmssoft/usr/local
  • Installed numpy-1.21.6 as part of requirements for ROOT and Jupyter
  • cmake command chose python3.1 system version. Remove CMakeFiles and edit CMakeCache file to point to python3.7 version
  • cmake3 -DPython3_EXECUTABLE=/data/chocula/cdmssoft/usr/local/bin/python3.7 -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=../root_install /data/chocula/neog/packages/root
  • cmake3 –build . – install -j4
  • cmake3 failed at 78% so rerun with just one thread
  • Error exist at 98% and reason being PyRoot showing errors
  • Solution: -Dpython=OFF to the cmake3 command to compile

Install midas_fork in /data/chocula/cdmssoft/packages_cdms8/repositories/midas_fork 

export PREFIX=/data/chocula/cdmssoft/packages_cdms8
make
make install
source setup/umn/cdms2midasUMN_cdms8.env
