Raise Main Bath

Now that the IVC has been pumped suffciently and the leak check has shown no gross leak, you can raise the main bath to proceed with the cooldown. Several checks and attachments need to be made before the MB should actually be lifted.

  1. Attach transfer cone to the G10 plate (green). Make sure it's oriented such that the bent tube points beneath the IVC. Tape the transfer cone down.
  2. Make sure G10 is level. Use the balance ruler to check this. Also make sure the dowels are secure - these are to make sure that the G10 plate doesn't shift in position.
  3. Remove the boards that block the pit.
  4. Remove the fan.
  5. Make sure that inside of the MB is clean and dry. If dirty, use the vacuum from the back room to clean it. If wet, use the long meter stick from the backroom and attach clean wipes to its end to wipe within the MB.
  6. Attach the metal cords that will be used to lift the MB to the ears on the sides of the MB.
  7. Use the crank to lift the MB around the cryostat. As the MB rises, you must make sure that the top is completely horizontal. You can use balance ruler to check that the sides of the MB are at the same level. If not, get two screwdrivers to rotate the metal connections that are attached to the sides of the MB - this will adjust the height of the side you are working on. If the MB is not as vertical as it could be, the dewar can get caught on the IVC, fridge baffles, or G10 plate.
  8. Lift the dewar as much as possible using the crank. Ideally it should be flush against the platform, but we might have to use the aid of fridge screws to lift the fridge completely. The next steps involve fastening the fridge to the platform with screws. Putting in screws can be slightly difficult, especially when dealing with the O-ring screws. A good way to do so is to find the screw hole that is the best aligned with a hole on the platform to screw in first. Continue to do this with as many screws as possible. This will progressively shift the dewar into the correct position and the holes that were originally difficult to enter will now be more friendly to deal with.
  9. Install the two largest fridge screws on top of the fridge by hand. It will be slightly difficult to align the main bath holes and the holes on the platform, so you may have to rotate the main bath a bit to get both screws to enter properly (they should not be difficult to get in). Alternate between the screws as you tighten them and don't tighten them completely.
  10. Install medium-sized fridge screws by hand. Turn the screw in as much as possible (hand-tight). Ideally the screws will be close to being flush to the top of the dewar.
  11. Install the small O-ring screws by hand. Again, there will be some difficulty because not all of the screw holes will be aligned with the platform holes right away. You may be able to shift the apparatus on top of the fridge to help align the holes for the O-ring screws. To do so, use a screwdriver to loosen some of the metal fastenings.
  12. Once all of the O-ring screws are in, tighten the large fridge screws completely. You will need to use the allen key to do this.
  13. Completely tighten the medium-sized fridge screws with the allen key.
  14. Completely tighten the O-ring screws with the allen key.
  15. Re-tighten the fastenings you loosened to move the platform around.
