Pump Dewar Jacket

To preserve the vacuum of the dewar jacket of the main bath, you will use the turbo pump. The goal is to reduce thermal exchange between the laboratory environment and the main bath, which will contain cryogenic liquid and the IVC. When setting up the dewar jacket to be pumped, you will be disconnecting and moving around metal hoses. You MUST make sure the ends of these hoses are protected with plastic caps.

  1. Make sure the IVC is isolated.
  2. Make sure the leak checker and scroll pump are off and isolated.
  3. Make sure the entire pumping station is off (green light is off).
  4. Disconnect the metal hose that leads from the pumping manifold to the scroll pump.
  5. Disconnect from the leak checker the metal hose that connects to it from the pumping station, and attach the metal hose removed in the step above to the loose end of the hose you just disconnected.
  6. From the red toolbox on top of the black tool cabinet, grab the L-shaped flange and attach it to the long end of the metal hose chain you've created.
  7. Make sure that the black valve on the dewar jacket is closed. Remove the flange cap from the dewar jacket port and attach the other end of the L-shaped flange.
  8. Follow the line to the turbo pump from the dewar jacket. Make sure that all valves along that line are open.
  9. Turn on the pumping station by pressing the green button.
  10. Open the valve to the turbo pump and turn on the turbo pump by pressing the far right button on the pumping manifold. The turbo pump, because already exposed to air, will not have to warm up but it will take a long time to reach <10E-2 mbar. Once it does, open the black valve leading to the dewar jacket.
  11. Pump for a few hours. You can check the pressure gauge, but if hasn't gone below 4E-3 mbar, then there is either a leak or the gauge is broken.
  12. When you are done pumping on the dewar jacket, isolate the dewar jacket by closing the black valve on it.
  13. Isolate the turbo pump by closing the black valve right above the pump. Close the following black valve along the metal hose chain. This will isolate the line leading to the IVC.
  14. Unfasten the metal hose from the dewar jacket and reattach a blank flange. Remove this metal hose completely and reconnect it between the leak checker and the pumping manifold.
  15. Reconnect the other end of the remaining metal hose to the scroll pump.
  16. Cover the top of the MB with the fan attached to the cardboard and turn the fan on. Cover the pit with planks for the time being.
