- Lab Update - Run 76 post-mortem
- Tower is removed, IVC disassembly in progress
- Stripline elbow thoughts:
- Stripline elbow o-ring was replaced in Jan 2018 and Apr 2021. Both times it was fine for a year or more, both times it started leaking later
- Hypothesis: frequent cold-cycling degrades the o-ring over time
- (didn't notice anything significantly wrong last time I removed the o-ring, but maybe hard to tell)
- Found an article discussing how weather impacts o-rings. It lists some materials that are resistant to cold cycling - the material we've been using – viton – is not in that list. Two materials they say are resistant to cold cycling and also to degradation from moisture are 1) ethylene propylene (EPR) and 2) nitrile.
- Ordered nitrile o-rings, we'll see if they work, and maybe they'll last
- Could consider some kind of heater to keep the stripline elbow warm during transfers.
-
- After the last move attempt we found that all the motor coils were open
- On disassembly - it turns out that all the tower wires connected to motor coils are broken. Apparently the motor driver sent so much current that it burned these wires out
- Should think about bypassing the tower wires….
- one possibility: replace the 8 broken tower wires with the same kind of wire (insulated NbTi+copper) that we use for the motor coils
