  • Lab Update
    • We've been trying the source mover:
      • this is the first run using electroplated NbTi and extending the NbTi all the way to the tower pin
      • we still see significant heating. But - we can do many-step moves without losing any current in the coils
      • This makes it seem like we can move it much faster. But why is the heating just as bad? Could be that the main contribution to fridge heating is friction (or eddy currents), and the Joule heating that drove the NbTi normal had a small effect on the fridge - and this Joule heating is now eliminated.
      • But there is still no evidence the source is actually moving. The noise in the detector is too high to use it to tell if the source has moved, so we are relying on the endstops. We've already moved 3.5 mm further than we should need to to hit the far endstop, but we still don't see contact. Why?
        • maybe the source isn't moving, or it's missing steps. But waveforms suggest that it's moving OK…
        • maybe I got the endstop wiring wrong. This is possible. Then maybe the source carriage is now jammed up against endstop. I've been watching temperature and current for changes that might suggest it's jammed. We saw lower temperature rises in Run71 when it jammed. Tests today with the spare motor suggest we would see no changes in current if it were jammed. May need to look more carefully at temperature patterns.
